Employee theft can be a problem in any industry. Internal theft ends up damaging the company's bottom line and no one wants to have employees they cannot trust. It is important for small business owners to discourage employee theft as much as possible.

Audit Items

If employees know that all items are being counted on a daily, weekly, or monthly basis, they will be less likely to try to steal anything. In a retail store, merchandise should be counted on a regular basis and cash drawers should be counted after each shift. Every business should keep a well-recorded inventory of all products, merchandise, and money—at the very least, this may dissuade some employees from attempting to steal anything.

Key Cards

Key cards are a great way to limit access to certain locations in a building. If you have an area of your business which contains money or high-end products, you should seriously consider restricting access to this space to only your most trusted employees. The rest will not be able to get in without the proper key card or authorization.

Cameras

Security cameras can stop employees from ever trying to steal anything. They will know they could be caught on camera, so they will not attempt to steal and may even work harder doing their job. Dummy cameras are an inexpensive way to make your employees think there are cameras and can serve the same purpose. Installing some hidden cameras can be useful too, especially if you’ve previously experienced incidents of employee theft.

Security Guards

If a business is trying to protect valuable items, a security guard can be a great asset. When you have a security guard, they will deter theft from customers and employees.

Safes

It is always a smart idea to have employees drop off a large amount of money into a safe. Business owners and supervisors should be the only ones with keys or combinations to the safe. If there is not a lot of money on site, employees will not be tempted to steal it.

Small business owners need to do everything possible to discourage theft. Every dollar counts when it comes to a business. It is important to stop employees from stealing merchandise and money. When business owners use the above techniques, they can feel confident that their employees will not want to steal from them.
