High Point - The Annual Small Business Awards Luncheon was held on Thursday, June 1, 2006, at the High Point Country Club, at 12 noon. The luncheon was held during a joint Rotary and Kiwanis meeting and a great crowd was on hand to congratulate the 2006 recipients.
“We are proud to take this opportunity to honor all the small businesses of High Point. The recipients of this year awards are just a few examples of the successful business spirit that exists in the High Point community,” states luncheon’s co-chairman for the High Point Chamber of Commerce, Lenora McCandless.
This year’s Small Business Person of the Year in the 1 to 25 Employees Category is Pedro Silva, Executive Director of the North Carolina Shakespeare Festival. The Small Business Person of the Year is Tonya Fowler, Executive Director of The Arc of High Point. Douglas Page, Vice President and City Executive of Omni National Bank was awarded the Minority Business Advocate of the Year. And Leah Price, City Executive with SunTrust Bank is this year’s Small Business Advocate of the Year.
The City of High Point Mayor’s office proclaimed June 1, 2006 as “Small Business Day”. “Our small businesses continue to be a major source of economic growth in our community with new and innovative products, industrial process and services; thus being the vertebra of our Nation’s economic backbone,” states Mayor Smothers in the proclamation.
“We are proud to honor these business leaders”, stated Tom Dayvault, President and CEO of the Chamber. “Small business is truly the backbone of our economy and the cornerstone of the free enterprise system.”
