The American Small Business League issued the following statement to salute Virginia Governor Tim Kaine for his efforts to help the small businesses in his state.

Governor Kaine signed an executive order today establishing a goal to ensure that 40% of the state's contracts for goods and services are awarded to small businesses, including those owned by women and minorities. According to a report by the Associated Press, Kaine stated that he wants to see that every company, regardless of its size, has an opportunity to compete for state contracts. State procurement personnel will be judged on this factor as part of their annual job performance review.

The governor signed another small business bill in June, which allows small firms in Virginia to collectively purchase health insurance. The bill was created on a bipartisan basis in the state legislature.

"Governor Tim Kaine is an inspiration to every small business in America," stated Lloyd Chapman, president of the American Small Business League. "The ASBL applauds his efforts to enact legislation that will help the vast majority of firms within his state. The Governor has shown that when the federal government falls short, a state government can step up and create a level playing field for the businesses where most Americans work. Governor Kaine, we salute you."

The American Small Business League was formed to promote and advocate policies that provide the greatest opportunity for small businesses -- the 98% of U.S. companies with less than 100 employees. The ASBL is founded on the principle that small businesses, the backbone of a vital American economy, should receive the fair treatment promised by the Small Business Act of 1953. Representing small businesses in all fields and industries throughout the United States, the ASBL monitors existing policies and proposed policy changes by the Small Business Administration and other federal agencies that affect its members.
