Employee Voting Leave in Alabama

Effective April 25, 2006, Alabama law provides that employees are, upon reasonable notice to employers, permitted to take time off from work, up to one hour, in order to vote in any municipal, county, state, or federal political party primary or election for which the employee is qualified and registered to vote. Time off to vote rules do not apply if an employee's work hours commence at least two hours after the opening of the polls or end at least one hour prior to the closing of the polls. The employer may specify the hours during which the employee is allowed time off to vote.

Effective January 1, 2007, any duly appointed precinct election official is excused from his or her employment without penalty or loss of time for election day only in order to perform the duties of the position to which he or she has been appointed.
