Policy rider

A policy rider is an additional provision that you and the insurance company agree to add to a policy. Riders can be added to the policy when you purchase it, or added at a later date to update the policy to accommodate changed circumstances. Once a rider is added, it becomes as much a part of the insurance policy as any other provision. Although the insurance company may allow some riders at no additional cost, it will charge additional premiums for a rider that will in any way expand policy coverage (such as adding a flood damage rider to a homeowners policy.)
