Prepaid expense

Prepaid expenses are amounts paid in advance to a vendor or creditor for goods or services. A prepaid expense is actually an asset of a business, because the vendor or supplier owes the business goods or services that have already been paid for. An example would be the unexpired portion of an annual insurance premium.
