Personal Income Tax in California

California imposes a personal income tax on your adjusted gross income that was generated in California. If you are operating your business as an S corporation, partnership, limited liability company, or sole proprietorship, you may be subject to a bracketed personal income tax rate that ranges from 1 percent to 9.3 percent.

For 2006, the indexed personal income tax rates for single taxpayers and married taxpayers filing separately range from 1 percent of the first $6,622 of taxable income to 9.3 percent of taxable income over $43,467. For married taxpayers filing jointly and surviving spouses, the rates range from 1 percent of the first $13,244 of taxable income to 9.3 percent of taxable income over $86,934. For taxpayers filing as heads of households, the rates range from 1 percent of the first $13,251 of taxable income to 9.3 percent of taxable income over $59,166.

This tax is imposed on any portion of your business income that passes through to you.
