Probably every small business owner knows that social media is a great marketing tool.

It's important to not only set up those social media accounts, but you've got to use them.

Twitter is a big one, easy to set up and use and can take you and your business a long way.

Some smart and savvy ways to use Twitter to help your business:

• Respond to tweets for smart customer service - For instance, maybe you own a restaurant. You get a tweet from a happy customer wishing you had another branch closer to him. In less than 140 characters, you can respond by thanking him and letting him know any plans for expansion. This may get a retweet from him, and you are immediately engaging and sharing.

• Have a great profile pic - This should not necessarily be a great picture of you, but maybe your logo or building or something to exemplify your business. If you are the face of the business, go for it and use your photo. A headshot is better than body shot, because it's small. Don't be afraid to change it, either. Maybe update with colors representing a current event or holiday. Think branding and that every tweet you send has this pic.

• Keep your bio current -This may mean changing it every few months and adding or deleting information. A good bio should include: What you do, how you can help, and how connecting with you is a good thing.

• Retweet - If you're not sure the best way to do this, check out the article “How to retweet with a comment in 3 simple steps.” Retweeting is good for you and your business as it shows you value your customers and their views, and also promotes engagement. That's what social media is all about, after all.

• Make sure people can find your account - You want to make it easy for anyone to find and follow your Twitter account. Have it in your store, on your website and business cards. Keep your username relevant to your business.

• Promote and include offers - If you tweet promos and offers, you'll gain more followers. People like to feel included and by bringing an offer only sent to followers, they'll feel more "in."

• Add visuals - You can include photos and videos to your tweets. A visual component can go a long way.

There are a lot of ways to incorporate Twitter into your social media marketing.

You can engage and expand your customer base.

It's a fun way to personalize and promote your small business in a cost-effective, easy way.
