SMC Business Councils Names Representative Markosek Public Service Award Winner

PITTSBURGH - SMC Business Councils and the U.S. Small Business Administration announced today that Pennsylvania Representative Joseph F. Markosek is the 2006 winner of the Leo R. McDonough Distinguished Public Official Small Business Advocate Award. The award will be presented on May 17 during a luncheon honoring winners of 2006 small business advocate awards at the Westin Convention Center Hotel in Pittsburgh.

SMC President Cliff Shannon said, "Representative Markosek was selected for this award because of his dedicated and unwavering support of our efforts to lower the costs of health care. He has also supported the small business positions on workers' comp and tort reform as well as legislative proposals to increase net operating loss carry-forward, oftentimes voting in opposition to his own party."

The award is presented in honor of Leo R. McDonough's 29 years of dedicated service to the small business movement in the United States. Mr. McDonough is the president-emeritus of SMC Business Councils, one of the founding organizations of the Western Pennsylvania Small Business Network, which annually sponsors Small Business Week in conjunction with the Pittsburgh District, U.S. Small Business Administration.

Mr. Markosek was elected to the Pennsylvania House of Representatives in 1982 and is now serving his 12th term. Markosek is chairman of the Commerce Committee and secretary of the Intergovernmental Affairs committee. A big proponent of public transportation, Markosek has focused on transportation issues, especially road improvements. He was the catalyst in securing funding for the Route 22 widening and was instrumental in providing the Link (small) Bus system for the Monroeville area. As House Commerce Chair, Mr. Markosek works with business and community leaders to create an environment in which economic development can thrive, as well as protect Pennsylvania consumers.

Previous McDonough Award Winners include Senator Rick Santorum, Representative Mike Turzai, Congressmen Phil English, Tim Murphy, Mike Doyle, and Congresswoman Melissa Hart.

SMC Business Councils is a non-profit trade association representing 3, 500 small businesses in western and central Pennsylvania. The headquarters office is located in Churchill with a branch office in Harrisburg, PA.
