Taxpayers should keep in mind that April 17, 2007 is the deadline for their 2006 returns and pay due taxes. The official deadline, April 15 falls Sunday and April 16 is Emancipation Day, which is a legal holiday in the District of Columbia. Thus the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has given taxpayers have some extra time to file and pay.

For an easier and quicker filing the Internal Revenue Service has improved some old and released new online tools. Individuals and small businesses can take advantage of the free electronic filing program launched in January 2007. The program, developed through a partnership between the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and the Free File Alliance LLC, is available for taxpayers who earn $52,000 or less.

IRS has updated its Alternative Minimum Tax (AMT) Assistant. With this online tool taxpayers can check whether they owe the AMT tax. The Alternative Minimum Tax Assistant is aimed at individual taxpayers and can be used by individuals, tax practitioners and community or public service organizations.

Another useful tool IRS has recently released is the State Sales Calculator. The tool helps individual taxpayers determine whether they might benefit by electing to deduct their state and local general sales taxes. Both the Alternative Minimum Tax Assistant and the State Sales Calculator are anonymous.

This year the Internal Revenue Service has partnered with over 12,000 free tax preparation sites as part of the IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program. The program offers free tax help to people who earn less than $39,000.

The Internal Revenue Service has specially urged taxpayers to check if they qualify for the telephone excise tax refund. According to IRS, more than 160 million of all individuals, businesses and tax-exempt organizations in the United States are qualified to request it.
