Technology is a crucial part of the business environment today, and hiring the best people to handle IT needs is crucial in any company. However, it can often be difficult to tell if a candidate will be the best for the job, and many hiring managers may not even know what to look for when searching for someone to fill a technical role. Luckily, there are a few things that businesses can do to make sure that they get the best IT professional for their company.

Go Through a Recruiter

Using a technical recruiter is likely the most efficient way for businesses to find the right IT staff. When companies decide to go this route, they take all of the leg work out of trying to locate people who would be best for the job. All they have to do is contact a reputable tech recruitment agency, and the recruiters will take care of spreading the word about the position and gathering resumes of potential candidates. The only thing that the human resources department will have to do is go through the resumes and contact individuals who they believe will be best for the job.

Use LinkedIn

Almost everyone who works with technology has a LinkedIn profile these days, and this makes it a great tool for trying to find the ideal person to fill a technical position. While it may involve sifting through a large number of profiles and trying to determine if individuals are currently looking for jobs, the site gives hiring managers access to a massive number of potential applicants. In fact, using LinkedIn for recruiting may be the best way to hire professionals who have already proven themselves to be assets at other companies and could potentially be lured away with the right offer.

Utilize GitHub

GitHub is a very popular website that allows people to post open source samples of code that they have written, and it is one of the best ways to find experienced programmers. When hiring programmers, a person's GitHub account can actually be even more useful than their resume because you can literally see examples of code that they have written. However, individuals should keep in mind that many programmers primarily write proprietary code for companies that they work for, so it is not necessarily a good idea to write someone off just because their GitHub account is sparse. Programmers who want to highlight their GitHub contributions will generally include their account URL in their resume.

Know What Credentials a Candidate Should Have for the Position

While GitHub can be an incredibly useful tool when evaluating programmers, there are many jobs in the IT field that would not require a person to have a portfolio of their work. When a company needs to hire a network or database administrator, they should make sure that the individuals they are considering for the position have the necessary industry certifications. For example, companies that utilize a Red Hat network should take a close look at applicants who hold RHCE certification, and those that use a Windows network should look for those with MCSE certification. Hiring individuals for database administrator roles is a little more difficult as certification for these jobs is not as standardized. However, it is always best to look for people who have demonstrated training in SQL from a reputable organization.

The Bottom Line

Finding highly trained IT professionals for a business can be a challenge. There are a large number of potential candidates on the job market, and determining whether their skills are sufficient to meet a company's demands is often a difficult task. However, businesses can make the process much easier if they use the right tools and criteria for evaluating a potential candidate. With this, any company can find the best IT professionals that will help an organization grow quickly and smoothly without any technology-related issues.
