Maybe you've dreamed of owning your own small business and you've finally determined that massage therapy can be for you, or maybe you've always known you'd be a great massage therapist - either way, you've decided now is the time to start that business. Congratulations!

But now you don't really know what to do. How do you even start a small business?

Follow these tips and before you know it, you can be the owner of your very own successful massage therapy business.

As the following article looks at, here are 8 tips for starting a massage therapy business:

  1. Make sure your certification/licensure is all in place - You'll need to have completed the required courses and certification procedures before starting your business. You'll also need to check to see what kind of license you need and how to obtain it. Once you have those necessary credentials, you're good to go.

  2. Decide where you want to work - Do you want to rent a space in a spa type environment or maybe contract with a health care provider, like a chiropractor or physical therapist. You could also work from your home or travel to your clients, but that may be more lucrative once you have built a client base.

  3. Make sure everything is good to go on the business end - That includes registering the name of your new business, completing tax documents, obtaining a tax ID number and getting the proper insurance. Any one of these left undone could cause problems later.

  4. Join professional associations - You can join massage related organizations as well as small business owner organizations. These are great for networking, bouncing ideas around and adding to your credibility.

  5. Begin to market yourself - Think about your image and brand. Create a website that is easy to navigate, visually appealing and informative. Start a Facebook page, Twitter account and Instagram page. Offer discounts to your fans and followers and get your name out there.

  6. Watch your money - Whether you've saved and have the money or have gotten a bank loan or money another way, keep track of what you spend. You want to make more than you spend, but know that may take a while. Keep track, though, because if money doesn't start coming in, you may need to rethink how you're managing the business.

  7. Create your space - Even if you are renting a space or going in-home, you can still have a signature style. Create a soothing space; maybe decide on one scented candle you'll use. Will you incorporate music or lighting? Most of these things can be portable, so you can create a calm space for your clients wherever you go.

  8. Be patient - Things don't usually happen overnight, so be patient. Take the time to lovingly and realistically build your business. Tweak it if it needs tweaking. You can do this!

You've decided on starting your own massage therapy business. You can do it!

Before long, you'll know the pleasures of being your own boss and running your very own business.
