When starting a home business, being creative and "thinking outside the box" are important tools and can be very effective;  but sometimes following the steps of others who have accomplished what you are trying to do could be even more beneficial to you and your business.

Despite the well known fact that almost 99% of home business's fail, there are still many success stories out there as well. As a future business owner, it is up to you to find and investigate those success stories. Find the business's similar to one that you are looking to start but have stood the test of time and have achieved a level of success that would satisfy you.

If you can, find two or three of these business's and really zoom in on them. Find out everything you can about them. Everything from how they got started to upcoming future plans. How long have they been in business?  Does their future look promising?  It wouldn't hurt to even become a customer (try out their products or services) to get a feel of how these business's operate. Check out their marketing, what strategies are they using to reach the customers?  Doing this will help you see where you can improve your business and even make it better than the ones started before yours.

If you can really find out what makes these successful home business's tick, there is a very good chance that you will be able to duplicate that formula, in return, making your efforts a little easier. Something that can be of great assistance to you would be to get a chance to talk to the people who are running these established home business's.  If you do get the opportunity to speak with the owner('s) do not waste their time, make  a list of questions you want to ask before you call them.

There are two ways you can go about collecting information from them.

One method would be to ask basic questions partaining to the company.  How long have they been in business,  is their future looking promising,  how do they stand up to the competition...etc.  You have to be careful not to come across to strong as an interviewer rather than just someone who is interested in doing business with them. What I mean by this is; you want to come across as someone interested in becoming a potential customer, not someone looking to steal their customers.

The other method would be to tell them exactly who you are and what you are trying to do. Do not be misleading at all.  This way could be a little bit more riskier, but it just might be worth it.  They may not tell you anything or they may walk you through everything that you could possibly need to know. There is also a possibility that they could give you false information in an attempt to stear you in the wrong direction.  But no matter what, remain positive and respectful, this will always get you further in business and in life.

Good Luck.
