When it comes to business success, relationships and networking are everything.

Who you know and make connections with can provide your business opportunities and growth it never would have found on its own. But, as most entrepreneurs know, networking is not as simple as it sounds.

There never seems to be enough time in the day to meet, mingle, and build relationships with people while simultaneously running a business.

With these five networking strategies, you can build a solid network while building a sustainable business:

1. Like-Minded People

When trying to juggle a growing business with networking, it is important to network carefully. Since your time is precious, be selective about the type of people you want to spend time with. Finding like-minded professionals who share your same goals and work ethic allows you to build a network and a reputation that’s positive toward your business’s success.

When expanding your network, check out companies online to get a feel for their product, service, and growth. Look inside your current network as well. Talk to associates and ask for recommendations of other individuals to connect with.

2. Make It Happen

Building a strong network comes at the expense of persistence. Once you’ve found a potential business ally, schedule a meeting with them as soon as possible. Grab a cup of coffee and talk business strategy. Set up a mixer at a bar or restaurant. Being proactive about networking will get your name and business out into the business community. Even when you don’t have a meeting scheduled, set aside time to network through following up with those you just met with a phone call or personal card.

3. Don’t Eat Alone

While there is nothing wrong with having an occasional meal to alone, eating is a perfect opportunity to meet with potential networking contacts. Because every person needs to eat, it is a great excuse for you and your contact to break away from the office and get to know each other. A great rule of thumb is to have at least one goal in mind for your meeting; otherwise you aren’t doing much to move your business forward.

4. Virtual Networking

With technology the way it is, there is no excuse not to network. Host a networking event through Google Hangout, Skype, Face Time, or even e-mail. It’s free, flexible, and doesn’t require contacts to leave their office.

5. Feedback and Ideas

A great way to start a networking relationship is by offering ideas to companies and public figures. Before meeting a person or organization, briefly research the company and their service and brainstorm ideas that could help their growth. This shows people that you are competent, capable, and an extremely valuable asset they want in their corner. Of course, when it comes to offering unprecedented business advice, be tactful about it. Approach the subject with ease and be an authority on the topic without being condescending. It allows you to communicate your worth without having to brag about it.
