Moving your growing business from your house to a more formal office space is a big and exciting step. As you plan this process, there are many issues to keep in mind. These four tips will help you to choose and set up a space that meets your needs, fits into your budget and keeps you and your employees and guests safe and healthy.

Security and Access

When you move your business from your home to an office suite, you will need to consider security and access. Electronic access by way of key cards with magnetic strips is one way to help limit unauthorized access and increase your safety. You could also consider key pads, fingerprint readers and optic readers to enhance the safety and security of your new work environment.

Ventilation Systems

Having a good ventilation system for your business is important. The ventilation system ensures that there is a constant and consistent flow of fresh, clean air into your working environment. This is especially important if your business involves the use of toners, paints or inks that release volatile organic compounds. Even the carpets, furniture and other items in your business release airborne pollutants. Some materials, like Trans Vent spiral tubing, is manufactured to meet individual customer needs. A great ventilation system ensures that you and your staff can breathe clean air as you work.

Energy Efficiency

Another consideration for your growing business is choosing a space that is energy-efficient. Consider whether the building is "green" or if it has LEED certification. Even if it does not, you could look into energy-efficient fixtures, replace the light bulbs with LEDs and make sure that the walls and ceilings are properly insulated. Consider arranging for an energy audit of the space and find out which improvements can be made in order to lower your monthly utility costs.

Communications

When your business was located in your house, you likely used your existing internet and phone services for your communications. When you move into an office space, you will need to have a dedicated means of contact so that your customers can reach you. Investing in a router, server and sophisticated computing system allows you to make use of voice over internet protocol phones and wireless internet access. These services can lower your expenses if you make a lot of calls or run an e-commerce platform.

Moving your business from home to an office requires plenty of planning. Choosing the right features in your space can make a significant difference in your productivity and profitability.
