Working from home is a great alternative to rush-hour commuting and workspace cubicle claustrophobia. And, when you're a home-based employee for your own small business, working from home is that much more rewarding.

So, how can you create the best, most efficient workspace for your small business needs and exactly how many Americans actually work from home?

At Home Business Statistics

More and more Americans are turning to a freelance lifestyle by turning their spare bedrooms and breakfast nooks into home-based business offices.

According to a recent Census Bureau study, roughly 13.5 million people work from home, which is roughly 9.5 percent of the country's workforce.

Of the millions working from home on a daily basis, 45% are self-employed business owners.

Likewise, the Census Bureau study also found that of the country's current workforce of 130 million people, roughly half hold jobs that are already compatible with working from home.

Setting Up the Perfect Home Office

Home office perfection is only a room away if you're willing to do a little changing and rearranging.

Whether it's simply setting up a desk in an unused bedroom or doing a full-fledged home renovation with a workplace spirit in mind, these home office basics will get the small business ball rolling:

Choose a Distraction-Free Spot - If the kitchen table isn't cutting it in terms of your home business needs, then it's time to find a dedicated workspace in your home.

Spare bedrooms and basements are great. Detached in-law suits are better. But, as long as it's a distraction free, Internet equipped zone, it should meet your work from home needs.

Make an Office Stockroom List - If you're going to run a business from the comfort of your own home, you must be prepared in the equipment and supplies categories.

Essentials like a computer, software, printer, and dependable Internet service should come first on the list. Next, your stockroom supplies like paper, printer ink, and anything else you might use on a daily basis.

Protect Your Business - Your home business is just as susceptible to unfortunate events as a regular business, so you should always think like a major corporation when protecting your livelihood.

Anti-viral and anti-spy software is a great start on the digital front and lockable file cabinets are also a wise option in the case of home intrusion. Likewise, storing any and all financial paperwork in a fireproof safe is also a smart, business-savvy move.

Create Storage - If your home office budget allows it, converting a closet into a built-in storage nook will free up more space for your office needs.

But, if your small business is on a small budget, adjustable, portable, and stackable storage containers are an affordable option. No matter which storage route you take, just remember that less clutter results in a more efficient work environment.

Personalize the Space - Considering you're the CEO and owner of your own house, your designated workspace can have any of the personal, inspirational touches you desire.

If that means painting the walls red or using your favorite recliner as a desk chair, as long as it promotes productivity, your home office is yours for the making.

By following the tips above, your home office will take your small business to all new heights.
