Being organized is extremely important to the success of a home
business. Learning how to spend your time more wisely to keeping all
paperwork in order could save you a lot of money in the long run. This
article will discuss six ways you can organize your home business which
will lead to an increase in your business’ revenue. - Keeping
an up to date calendar will help you stay on task. Make sure you have a
current calendar and post it where it is clearly visible from your
desk. Every day write in important events and look over what is coming
up for the next 5 business days. Schedule blocks of time for every
aspect of your business. For example, on Mondays make business calls on
Tuesdays work on customer newsletter. Treat your business like a job
and make sure you take at least 2 days off during the week.
- Just
like any other job schedule time for your business. If you want to run
your business full time then block out 8 hours each day to focus on
your business and nothing else. If you just want to work part time then
set aside 4 hours a day for your business. During that time it is
critical that you forget about everything else in your life, family,
housework etc. Tell your family and friends that you will be working
during those hours and can not be disturbed.
- Organize your
office space. A clean and well organized office will make running a
business from home a lot easier. Set aside a day to “clean house.”
Throw away unimportant papers rid your desk of clutter. Make sure all
your files are clearly labeled. Plastic trays are handy to use to sort
your mail and bills. If your business requires an inventory use plastic
totes to keep everything contained. Labeling the totes will help you
keep track of their contents. Keeping a bulletin board in your office
is a great way to keep track of meeting and conference reminders,
flyers and announcements.
- Make sure your finances are in
order. It is extremely important to keep track of what you are spending
and where your profits are coming from. Use a balance sheet or
Microsoft Excel. Make sure you are not overspending. If you are
overspending what can you cut out of your budget to improve your
return? Always make sure you are making more money then you are
spending.
- Organizing the contents on your computer will also
save you time and money. A computer that is cluttered with old files
and programs will work a lot slower and lead to many headaches. It is a
great idea to sort through all your files, folders and programs at
least once a month to keep your computer running smoothly. Delete any
files and programs that you no longer need. This will open up some more
space on your hard drive which will help your computer run faster. Make
sure the software programs that you use every day are up to date and
current. New folders on your desktop will keep your shortcut icons in
order.
- Update your business goals or set new ones. What
direction is your business headed? Where do you want it to go? Set
income goals and what you are going to do to reach those goals. Make
sure you write your goals down and how you are going to accomplish
those goals. For example, in October I would like to make an extra
$500. In order to do this I will have to set up a booth at a flea
market, pass out flyers to the parents at my daughter’s school and send
out a direct mail marketing campaign. Make sure these steps are
scheduled in your calendar.
